According to the American Medical Association, approximately 45 million U.S. citizens are uninsured. Disparities in access to health care can have far reaching consequences. Individuals denied access to basic care may be more susceptible to negative health outcomes when compared to those with adequate levels of health care. Limits to public programs and gaps in employer health care coverage create a barrier to obtaining timely and sufficient care, leaving millions of people at risk to a range of illnesses and avoidable health problems.
