About Violence & Injury

Violence is among the leading causes of death for people aged 15-44, claiming over 1.6 million lives of all ages worldwide.  Violence is an extremely dynamic and complex phenomenon that threatens the life, health, and well-being of individuals and communities.  The World Health Organization defines violence as “the intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, another person, or against a group or community, that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation.” Raising awareness of the fact that violence is both predictable and preventable may serve as a first step to controlling the effect of violence on public health.
