Diabetes affects 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, which is 7.8% of the population. Unfortunately, nearly a quarter of those who have diabetes have not yet been diagnosed. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or correctly use a hormone called insulin. Insulin regulates the use of the food we eat within the body. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5-10% of the total diabetes cases in the U.S. It is characterized by an inability to produce insulin which means that insulin injections are required. Type 2 diabetes is far more prevalent and is characterized by an inability to properly use insulin. Type 2 diabetes can often be controlled by making lifestyle changes such as increasing exercise and regulating diet, but can also be controlled with pharmaceuticals.
